kind of like a vcr but its for your tv like its a cable box you know like from comcast but you schedule it to record different shows and it holds up to a certain amount of hours or whatever and then you can delete stuff or save it until you get ready to watch it..........i have it, its really good i guess kind of like tebo and plus you can rewind like any regular show even if you arent recording it

  2. DVR stands for Digitial Video Recorder.  VHS stands for Vertical Helix Scan, which refers to the way in which the video signal is written on the magnetic tape.

VHS is an analog encoding of a video signal on a magnetic tape.  DVRs use a digital encoding on more reliable media, typically hard-drives today but that may change as other media become cheaper.

Today's DVRs use MPEG 2 and MPEG 4 encoding.  MPEG is a video encoding standard created by the Motion Picture Expert Group that selectively discards information to decrease the amount of data needed to represent a video without noticeably affecting the apparent quality of the video.  This is possible because the encoders can take advantage of the way the human eyes, ears, and brain process visual and audio sensations.  For example, humans can see many more shades of green than shades of blue.

The key consumer differences between DVRs and VCRs are:

    1. DVRs have much higher quality images because the MPEG standard represents colors better than the analog standards like NTSC, which was designed to be backwards complatible with black-and-white televisions.

    2. DVR video is stored digitally and so it does not deteriorate with use like analog formats.

    3. VHS tapes wear out.  DVRs' hard drives have much longer lifespans and wear out more gracefully.  A hard drive will lose capacity rather than fidelity.

    4. DVRs make it easy to watch programs in a order different than they were recorded because any video on the hard drive can be accessed without having to fast-forward or rewind past other videos.  Video tape does not provide this random access.

    5. Similarly, deleting a video from a DVR can be done with the click of a button.  As the DVR records other programs, it will work around the free space on its hard drive.  You don't have to manage free space like you do with tape, i.e. making sure you don't record over something by accident.

    6. On the down side, most popular DVRs are made by companies that charge a monthly fee for their use in addition to the purchase price of the DVR.  This is simply profit-taking.

The best DVR I have ever used is UltimateTV, which is far better than Tivo will ever be.  Unfortunately, UltimateTV is no longer made.  I have heard good things about Replay, but have not used them.
