it's a region of western Sudan where both black African Muslims and Arab African Muslims live.  the black tribes are settled into villages and the Arabs are more nomadic.  disputes over land and preferential government treatment of Arabs, among other things, has led to a genocide of the black Africans, supported by the Arab-led government.
