  1. The Dirac sea is a theoretical model of the vacuum. It was invented by the British physicist Paul Dirac in 1930. He had developed a mathematical description of the behaviour of the electron. However, his equations had two solutions, the first being the electron. The second appeared (mathematically) as holes in an infinite sea of particles. Dirac proposed that these anomalous negative-energy states were positively charged counterparts of the electrons, called positrons.

A great idea because in 1932 they indeed were discovered experimentally.
