  1. DivX is a media player like windows media player or quick time

it plays file types like avi

avi can be played with dvd players but DivX is just a media player itself. so therefore no.

  2. Divx is just a hacked version of Microsoft's Avi codec. As such it has never really been embraced by hardware vendors until recently. It is usually a .avi file extension but sometimes it is .divx also. Not very often, 99% of the time it is just .avi.

The last few years have seen a number of DVD players come out with Divx support which is awesome.

  3. i don't know exactly what it is but usually movies that come in divx are avi in codic you can't played on dvd players what you do

a program that can convert it from avi(or whatever) to dvd then you can play it. i recommend amadis.

  4. divX is a software container for video/music. It's a cross platform media type, but it used to be hugely popular when it was open sourced, however later version went back to closed source, and Now xvid (or divx backward) is more popular because of it's open sourced software language.

Older divx can be played on some dvd players. Mainly players not found in the US. some european players, and some south asian player are capable of playing divx.

Now if you need to play divx on a dvd player, you need to transcode the file, into a playable format like avi, or wmv
