They're are names to sum up the stocks of different companies in the stcok market.  lots o companies. big ones too.  that's why these numbers are often shown on the news because it gives us a perspective on how our economy is doing.  you know how it sucks right now.  when the value of it goes down you will se a red arrow. thats bad.  when its doing good it has a green up arrow which is good.  unfortunately we have been seeing more red than green.

    Nasdaq is an acronym for the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. This is also known as the over-the-counter stock market. There are several thousand companies listed on this exchange, many of them small to mid-size, although there are also giants such as Apple, Microsoft and Intel which trade here, as well.
