My husband deploys to Iraq in Oct. we want to set up allotments and such for savings before he leaves. If anyone is a Sgt in the army with dependents(3) and has been overseas, please help. Just want to know what pay day will look like. Also, I know that it will be tax free but does SS and Medicare still get deducted? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  1. When I was deployed I was getting about $3000 a month. That was in 2004 and without dependents so that may help you out a little bit I think SS and Medicare were still taken out but don't remember for certain.

  2. Unless you state how many years he has been in it is hard to say.  you would also need to say where he is going.  For his monthly pay go to http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/military... to get the amount.  They actually deduct FICA  and then pay it back. And yes Medicare and Social Security are still taken out.

When he is gone longer than 30 days he will get $250 for Family Separation.  If you live out in town then you get BAH based on his base's zip code.  He will get HDP/IP which is $250 per month.  Save Pay is also a possibility but some do not get that until they return, the same with Per Diem.

  3. You'll get family separation ($250/mo), hazardous duty pay (based on location, my husband gets $100/mo in Iraq), and hazardous fire pay (based on rank, should be around $200/mo or so for an E5).  Yes, they don't take federal income taxes, but do still take SS and Medicare.

Some start as soon as he gets there, but family separation doesn't start until you've been apart for 30 days.
