What is El Nino and how often do they occur?

it was a big storm and it was named like that...a tropical storm.....will happen again but with a driffrent name .....like katrina

El Nino is a term used to describe above normal water temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.  Over the years, research has linked the occurance of El Nino to abnormal weather conditions around the globe, including heavy rainfall in Coastal California for example.  They typically occur every 7-10 years, and often persits for 1-2 years.
