I keep running across Erickson's name and "so called techniques", but the more I read the more confused I get.

You are speaking of the techniques of Milton Erickson.  Erickson used what is called an Interface humanitarian design.  Many people support the techniques practiced, others however, do not.  Hypnosis is a powerful tool in the hands of a master practitioner.  Be careful of imposter's and fly-by-night institutions that claim to be able to teach any reasonable therapeutic technique.  Hypnosis in the hands of a faker or poorly trained social worker is like a loaded gun in the hands of a child.
