  1. An imaginary line from pole to pole, cuts through Greenwich, England.  By convention,  it is assigned 0 degrees longitude. Greenwich Mean Time now generally replaced by Coordinated Universal Time.  There are 24 time zones in the world, each approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide.  We, in the  continental U. S., know ours as Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific.  They are also assigned a letter A-Z (excluding I and O)  with "Z" being assigned to Greenwich so it is sometimes referred to as "Z" time.  Directly opposite at 180 degrees E/W of Greenwich is the International Dateline where the day officially begins/ends.  Time + or - Greenwich is calculated based on how many degrees one travels east or west.

To dispense with the calculations Aviators (and others) use GMT or CUT everywhere.  So, if one takes off in New York at 1730 GMT and flies 3 hours landing will be at 2030 GMT.

  2. GREENWITCH MERIDIAN TIME( GMT)

    MINOR CHANGES

  3. Stands for "Greenwich Meridian Time": the time at latitude 0 degrees

+ and - refer to how many hours ahead or behind GMT that timezone is

if it is 12.00 in Greenwich, and somewhere else it is 9.00, that place is -3 GMT

  4. It is Greenwich Mean Time, the standard for our time system.  It is a longitude line that runs through Greenwich, England.  I haven't seen the + or - used, but I would guess that + means east of the GMT line and - means west of it, because the time is later east of the line and earlier west of it, at least when you get to the next time zone in either direction.

  5. There is an imaginary logitude that has been assumed to pass through Greenwich(it's a place in Europe).

People have conventionally been following this time as the reference frame sort of thing for all other places on the Earth.

The time in those places that lie to the East of "The Greenwich Meridian" is calculated by + x hrs GMT...

This means that they are ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time by x hours.

And likewise for those places in the West....They are dwnoted by -x hrs GMT...
