  1. Grenwich mean time. It the latitude(?) at which 0 is on the time scale. It goes through Grenwich in the UK, which gives it the name. From this line, looking on a flat map, to the right you add an hour and to the left you take an hour for each time line you can see on the map (it actually goes up in minutes. For example looking on a map if the time in London is 1pm, the time in France is 2pm and the time in the closest part of America is around 8am (of the same day)

  2. It's function is to establish a point of reference for time on Earth.  So if I were in the United States and I was conducting a military operation in Russia, you would communicate about time using GMT.  That way everyone knows what time you are talking about.

  3. gembolat... is confusing.  The east-west direction is the longitude.  You don't need  flat map.  GMT is Greenwich Mean Time, a clock that is used for navigational and other astronomical purposes.  It is based upon the standard time in London, England independent of where you are.  Sunrise/Sunset tables use GMT so that it is possible to calculate how far east or west you are from zero degrees longitude.

As an example if you were on a ship 1200 (noon) GMT September 21 but the sun was just coming up, you would be near 90 degrees west of London.

  4. GMT is Greenwich Mean Time.

It is a time line that runs through Greenwich, UK and the time zones go east and west from there.

So if it is 9am in Greenwich and you had traveled east GMT+1 it'd be 10am. Going one hour west being GMT-1 would be 8am.

    I hope this helps.
