  1. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a union of four constituent countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.  A citizen of each of these countries is also considered "British".  Americans (in their ignorance), however, sometimes refer to all of the above as "English", which undoubtedly irritates the Scots, the Welsh, and the Northern Irish.  This is a similar mistake to calling everyone from the United States a "Yank".

According to the 2001 Census for the UK, those polled identified themselves as follows:

    ---English (83.6 percent)

    ---Scottish (8.6 percent)

    ---Welsh (4.9 percent)

    ---Northern Irish (2.9 percent)

    ---black (2 percent)

    ---Indian (1.8 percent)

    ---Pakistani (1.3 percent)

    ---mixed ancestry (1.2 percent)

    ---other 1.6 percent

  2. Yes we are all British.

  3. Great Britain is simply the largest of the British Isles.
