Question:

What is Guinness like?

My husband is asking me to join in with him and his friends in a Guinness drinking party they are having tonight at our place. I was going to go shopping while the men have their get together but now apparently a few of the wives are coming over too and he'd like me to be there to help entertain. I'm okay with this but I have never had Guinness. What does it taste like? I'm a little apprehensive.

  1. It's just beer, no reason to be apprehensive. Try it; I can guarantee you it's not nearly what you think it is... whether that is heavy, harsh or strong.

Guinness tastes "creamy" if that makes any sense to you. It IS different from your normal yellow, fizzy American beers, because its carbonated with nitrogen instead of CO2. This makes it less bubbly and more foamy.

I will say that it tastes much smoother than it looks. I know it seems like it would have a harsh, coffee-like taste but it's really nothing like that at all.

As for its strength, at just over 4% alcohol by volume, Guinness has about as much alcohol as a Bud Light! It's not particularly strong at all and is definitely on the low end of the ABV scale.

Finally, Guinness is good for you! No really; much like the antioxidant properties of red wine are said to leave the French living far longer than the average world citizen, Guinness has many of the same antioxidants.

So go ahead, try some Guinness... don't be apprehensive. It may not be a "drink every day" beer, but it is certainly a delicious treat once in a while.

  2. Its like flat beer, but not as disgusting as it as it tastes much richer than beer. It is really smooth aswell. Make sure you drink it cold though, warm guiness tastes like p**s!

  3. i drink every day and it is very good go and get messed up. I would

  4. Guisnness is smooth..Not harsh you should like it....

  5. From my Beer Advocate review:

Appearance - Slight ruby hew when held to the light. Thick head that dissipates slowly. Lacing remains throughout the pint.

Smell - Slightly watered down. Hints of coffee and chocolate malts. Little to no hops notes.

Taste - Bitter coffee and dark chocolate notes...not as heavy as most stouts. Flavor quickly evaporates from your palette, leaving behind that watered down feeling from the smell.

Mouthfeel - Silky smooth. Can't say much more than that really. So smooth that it glides down almost.

Drinkability - This is an entry level stout. Not bad, but certainly not as full-bodied as one would hope from the most famous of all stouts. At 4.1% ABV it makes a great session beer...and at 125 calories per 12oz it isn't filling. Personally, I'll stay with Imperial Stouts if I have a choice...if not Guinness is a good standby. Even if I do have problems with their unethical business practices and treatment of the Irish people.

My overall rating was a B-...C- if you take into account it's history and the fact it isn't actually brewed in Ireland anymore.

  6. im irish an i think guinness is nasty especially if your going to be drinking it from cans or bottles draught is the only way to drink it and even in ireland where its superior to anywhere else its nasty but thats just my opinion to answer your question about taste i would have to say like cold coffee!

  7. It is very dark, almost like drinking a cold coffee.  Personally I love it.  But I would say unless your a beer drinker you probably won't like it.  Give it a try though it's has a different texture than most beers and atleast you will know if you like it or not

  8. It's like drinking motor oil.

  9. It is yummy, like a beer milkshake!

  10. Give it a go; it has a very smooth, creamy, nutty flavour with some sweet caramel undertones.  Personally I prefer it from a tap and not a can/bottle, but that's just a personal preference.  Plus, enjoying it in a bar in the company of a few friends makes it that much better.

Guinness is meant to be savoured so you needn't chug it.

I would argue that Guinness is proof that God exists and wants me to be happy.

  11. I'd say Guiness is creamy but slightly bitter..Why not go the the supermarket, buy one and try it before tonight. Then you know what youe in for!!!

  12. Mother's Milk

Seriously, it is smooth.  Don't let the dark appearance fool you.  I don't like to get drunk off of it but I enjoy it in the morning to ward off a hangover.

If you try some and don't like it, maybe you could arrange for Irish Coffee or Irish Whiskey instead and call it an Irish party?

  13. It taste great.
