A HDMI carries a digital high-definition source between two sources, typically a HD-ready TV, and a high definition player (Blu-ray disc player, PS3 etc). A SCART cable is only capable of carrying a standard definition picture and sound. HDMI cables are probably going to replace SCART cables going into the future.
