  1. Hashimoto's disease causes inflammation of your thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck, just below your Adam's apple. Although it weighs less than an ounce, the thyroid gland has an enormous effect on your health. It's part of your endocrine system, which is made up of several glands and tissues that produce hormones. These chemical messengers coordinate many of your body's activities, from digestion to metabolism to reproduction.

Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system inappropriately attacks your thyroid gland, causing damage to your thyroid cells and upsetting the balance of chemical reactions in your body. The inflammation caused by Hashimoto's disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, often leads to an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States.

Doctors use blood tests of thyroid function to detect Hashimoto's disease. Treatment of Hashimoto's disease with thyroid hormone replacement medication usually is simple and effective.-

  2. Hashimoto's is a common cause of hyothyroid conditions.

it occurs as part of an auto-immune reaction.

Basically, your body has decided that your thyroid doesn't belong and is attacking it.

While this can't be stopped, there is a simple treatment available.

Basically, you will ned to take a synthetic form of thyroxin in tablet form daily for the rest of your life.

The pills are tasteless, and there are no real side effects, although it sometimes takes a bit of fiddling to get your dosage right.

  3. My mom had what she called 'wasedoshi' disease.  It had something to do with her thyroid not working correctly.  I think her gland was overproducing hormones.  At any rate, she had to drink a bottle of iodine to permanently diable her thyroid gland, unfortunately.  Now, she takes hormone pills because her thyroid doesn't produce hormones any more.

I think the condition is named after a Japanese doctor's name because this kind of thyroid condition is especially prevalent in asian female population.
