What is Hip Hop to you?

Question

I really want to know what Hip Hop is in a broader more versatile context. Especially sense the recent acclaims of its art descending towards unpopularity and merit-less. I believe Hip Hop is Kanye and Common, not that southern music that seems more of "self-promoting" and not for uplifting oppressed people.

Hip hop to me is rhyming with great lyrics that reflect on life...not 30 inch dubs or hoes and money

From what I've heard of Hip Hop so far, which is not much, I don't really like it. To me it is just noise and I really don't get it. Just my view. I prefer rock music myself.

Well hip-hop is actually a culture and it consists of four elements: rhyming, dj ing, break dancing, and graffiti.

Hip-Hop is a form of rap, just like soul is a form of r&b. Thus, all rap is not hip-hop (and you listed a perfect example with the southern music, although just being from the south doesn't necessarily disqualify someone from making hip-hop music).

I wouldn't consider Lil Wayne and gansta rap hip-hop, but Jay-z, Common, Kanye, Biggie...yes, that's hip-hop! I can't elaborate any further.

Hip hop is the culture rap is the music... breakdancing, graffiti art, beat boxing are all apart of the culture... hip hop/rap artist, I would go back to the old school... DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, DJ Scott La Rock, Melly Mel, Mc Shan, KRS-1, D Nice,  Juice Crew, Eric B and Rakim... those artist are some of the ones I believe are the heart of the music... most of this new **** is just that .... ****
