It's a dark sweet sauce. It is used in Chinese cooking very often. I also seen it being used in Vietnamese restaurants. I'm not sure about Thai

it's a chinese dipping sauce that's made with water, sugar, soybeans, white distilled vinegar, rice, salt, wheat flour, garlic, and red chili peppers, and sweet potatoes. literally translated from chinese to english it means seafood sauce, but don't worry, there's not fish in it at all. it's usually used with peking duck or spring rolls. the thai link is that it's usually also served with pho and chicken.

It is not Thai at all, it is Chinese, and literately it means sea foods sauce. However many Thai cusines use Chinese ingredients.

I don't agree with the first person, for people who are allergic to sea foods they can substituted it for shitake mushroom sauce or all purpose sauce.

It's Chinese in origin and actually the Chinese equivalent of BBQ sauce as it's commonly used as a marinade for meats before roasting, like making char siew (Chinese BBQ pork). As a marinade it can be used on its own or in combination with other stuff, just experiment. I use it as a base for a East-West marinade for stuff like pork ribs.

Pretty versatile also as a table dipping sauce (dilute a bit if too thick) or used in stir-frys. The dominant taste is sweetish but don't forget the hidden saltiness.
