What is Hurling and Gaelic?

Now that I know Gaelic is a sport and saw a glimpse of Herling, I need help understanding them. If you can explain the basics and maybe include a website with the rules it would help me better understand what sports people enjoy in Ireland.

hurling-sport game played with 'hurley' sticks which are used to pass a small ball around the playing field. pretty much the same as hockey but the hurley sticks are made of wood.

gaelic-similar to English soccer except the players can pick up the ball with their hands.if they get the ball over the goalbar its one point and if they get it in, its a goal. I think 3 points are equal to one goal.

Gaelic can mean both Irish as a language and gaelic football. both games are still popular in Ireland. hurling is huge in Kilkenny but English soccer is the most popular sport in Ireland

         First of all let me help you about Gaelic sprts, they have a governing body know by its initials, as the G.A.A. which reads out as the Gaelic Athletics Association, the gaelic game of Foot ball, is plaed on a rugby sized ground, and the players can score over the cross bar of an 'H' style of scoring post, or into the net fastened to the cross bar and draped behind the posts as in the English game if football. Very exciting. Now the game of Hurling is played on a similar pitch, and still has an 'H' for its goal posts. the 'shlitter' as it is pronounced is the ball, and the players can score over the cross bar or into the net, and the hurley is very like a hockey stick, but has a blade on the 'contact with the ball' end of it, which is as broad as a mans hand, and there is an Irish film devoted to this sport Known as 'The Clash of the Ash', and goes some way to explain, what the Hurley stick is made of, now here's an interesting bit, Girls and Ladies actually have leagues in Ireland and the Hurling game played by them is known as 'Carmogie' and I promise you it is every bit as competitive as the Boys and Mens version of the game, and bruises and fractures are just as common to all the players. Me, ha ha ha I am too old to play either game now, but I can assure you a hurley in the shin, can be a very painful injury....... Gaelic is the native language of the Celts in Ireland. Hurling is a sport that is somewhat unique to Ireland. It is similar to field hockey but at the same time is quite different. Go to www.wikipedia.org and type it in.

Gaelic is what Gaelic Football is called in Ireland - presumably most of the previous respondents are not Irish or they would have known that.

The Irish language is called Irish or Gaeilge, NOT Gaelic.

Edit: She is not wrong, Gaelic is the Irish language but Gaelic Football is often referred to by the term "Gaelic" or "Football".. at least where I grew up it was.

Gaelic isn't a sport it is a language, based around celtic countries but most noticeably Ireland and Scotland.

Hurling is a game similar to shinty or lacrosse in some respects but physically more dangerous. Like comparing Aussie rules football to American Football. See link below for a website giving more information:

No, gaelic is a language, hurling is a sport similar to hockey except the ball can be lobbed high in the air and really smacked down the field. The players can also run with the ball on the stick blade.
