  1. In East India (Orissa,Bengal) the most popular breakfast are Idly,Bara,Puri and Upama. These are served with Ghuguni (Peas curry) or potato curry and also sweets like Rasogala, chenapoda etc..

    In South India, the most popular breakfast is an assortment with several possible main dishes, such as idlis, vadas, dosas and chapatis. These are most often served with hot sambar and at least one kind of chutney are the common items in Tamilnadu.

    The usual North Indian breakfast consists of stuffed paratha breads or unstuffed parathas (they resemble oily milee crepes) with fresh butter, cooked spicy vegetables especially aloo sabzi. Popular accompaniments include sweets like jalebi, halwa, and sweetened milk. In Maharashtra, Poha, Upma or Shira (similar to Kesaribath) is frequently eaten for breakfast. In urban areas, omlettes and simple butter sandwiches are becoming a popular breakfast food.

    These are traditional, of course nowadays toast, eggs, cereals... are also eaten.

Popular foods include appam (thin, crepe-like rice pancakes that are often filled with spiced meat or potatoes and vegetables), idi-appam (rice noodles eaten with either sweet coconut milk or a meat curry), idli (small steamed cakes made with a lightly fermented batter of rice and split peas) and puttu (crushed rice and coconut pressed in alternating layers into a bamboo mold, then steamed and served with bananas and milk).

    Far to the north, in Kashmir, the day starts particularly early, so the first meal is usually a quick cup of tea with some bread. Kashmiris drink a green tea, which they make in a samovar. The tea may be drunk plain, but if possible, sugar, cardamom and ground almonds are added to make a concoction known as kahva. Many of the breads that are eaten in Kashmir are, like the samovar for the tea, more related to Middle Eastern cuisines than Indian. They are leavened wheat breads, among them are the slightly sweet bakirkhani and the sesame-sprinkled tsachvaru.

    Sometimes porridge made by roasting the oats first in butter, and then reducing the milk long and slow.

    Sometimes "sevian" which is like rice pudding but with vermicelli. It's cardamom flavoured.

    The parathas can be stuffed with left over aloo gobi, or mooli and coriander/chilli etc.

    Breakfast is my favoritr meal of the day and to have an indian breakfast is such a T-R-E-A-T!

    Heres a recipe -

    Soft Idly recipe-

    ===Ingredients===

    Idly rice 2 cups (Ponni rice if possible)

    Urud dal 1 cup

    cooked rice 1/2 cup

    Fenugreek seeds(Methi) 1/4 tsp

    Salt as per taste

    Soak Idly rice and Methi together in water for about 5-6 hours.

    Soak urud dal in water for 3 1/2 hours.

    Drain the water from urud dal and grind it in mixie with little water.

    Fine grind it until the mixture is frothy. Keep aside

    Now drain water from soaked rice and methi.

    Grind these along with cooked rice and little water in mixie.

    Now mix the ground items and add salt.

    Allow it to ferment for 16 - 18 hours. Then make idlys in the idly steamer. Steam the idlys on high for 10 minutes

    Indian breakfast is so delicious!

    Too bad i dont get lucky enough to eat it every day!

  8. I've had an Indian omelette for breakfast, which is a regular omelette with loads of spices and chilli in it.

  9. they are thosais, idlis served with coconut chutney and sambar which is dhall curry. also prata with curry, uppuma which is semolina flour cooked like grit. thosia and idli is a mixture of urad dhall and rice blended together. normally indian breakfast is spicy and always served with coffee.

  10. when i was in middle east we had an indian office boy he used to bring us what he had for breakfast which was like omlette with curry spices and veg wrapped up in flatbread, they were delicious

    indians hav different kinds of food in different regions

    i generally have pohe or upma or thalipith....this is maharashtrian food

    north indians hav chole bhature or paratha

    south indians hav idli, sambar, dosa n chatni

  12. Kedgerie - rice, mackrel, raisons - can't remember what else. Served cold.

    In Nepal they don't eat breakfast but eat rice, spinach, dhal and some nan bread at around 11am the dinner at around 6pm.
