  1. ipecac is a homoeopathic remedy for vomiting, nausea, chest congestions etc

  2. It is a purgative...it induces vomitting.

It used to be given to people who had accidently or intentionally taken a poison or an overdose of medication.  However evidence showed that it was an ineffective, and potentially dangerous treatment so it is no longer used by doctors.

  3. Off the top of my head I don't remember exactly what is in ipecac syrup, however it is used to induce vomiting when someone has ingested a harmful substance. Vomiting is induced when the objective is to remove the substance before it can be absorbed by the GI tract ... however it is very important that vomiting NOT be induced when the substance is potentially caustic and might damage the GI tract on it's way "back out" ... in this case a neutralizing substance, such as activated charcoal is administered via an NG (nsaogastric tube).

  4. It is a syrup that induces vomiting. Good for expelling poison that has been ingested. Not all poisons should be vomited up but many can be.
