  1. Judo (柔道, jūdō?), meaning "gentle way", is a modern Japanese martial art (gendai budō) and combat sport, that originated in Japan in the late nineteenth century. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking the elbow or by applying a choke. Strikes and thrusts (by hands and feet) - as well as weapons defences - are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).

Ultimately, the philosophy and subsequent pedagogy developed for judo became the model for almost all modern Japanese martial arts that developed from "traditional" schools (koryū).

Practitioners of judo are called jūdōka.

  2. Judo is the 'gentle way' (and sport) created by a Japanese Jujutsu stylist named Jigoro Kano in the late 1800s. Kano took what he learned from a number of different jujutsu styles before creating the sport of Judo. Judo places great emphasis on locks, take downs, and throws. Your Judo instructor will sell you the kind of judogi (judo uniform) that you will need to have for class.

  3. geez is everybody getting all their information from wikipedia?

  4. Judo, which means "The Gentle Way", is a Japanese martial art based upon the ancient techniques of jujutsu.  Dr. Jigoro Kano, President of the University of Education in Tokyo, developed judo in 1882.  Dr. Kano, who had studied jujutsu in his youth, incorporated the best of these ancient techniques into the new art of Judo.  Dr. Kano subsequently founded the Kodokan in Tokyo, Japan as an place to teach his new art.

Judo is known for its spectacular throwing techniques but also includes numerous techniques for controlling an opponent while on the ground.  A good judoka, one who practices Judo, will first use timing and leverage to bring his opponent off balance and execute a throw.  Once the judoka has thrown his opponent to the ground, he will use painful hold-down techniques, chokes, strangleholds, and armlocks to control and subdue the opponent.  A judoka first learns "ukemi", the art of falling properly to avoid injury.

The main most obvious difference between Judo and Karate is that Karate focuses on strikes while Judo is more about throws and groundwork. Any good heavy duty gi will do the job- double weave is best so that it doesn't get ripped during throws or groundwork.

    Good luck!

  5. Judo is a martial art that was created by Dr. Kano. Dr. Kano had studied jujitsu and wanted to create an art for competition. He used much of jujitsu leaving out some of the more dangerous techniques.  Judo contains throws, sweeps, reaps, chokes, and a few joint locks.

Karate on the other hand has more strikes, and kicks. If taught correctly it also has throws, and joint locks.

As for the uniform. Best you wait until you start and find out what the instructor wants you to wear. In the 1960's the judo Gi's were white. These days they may be white, black, blue, ...etc.  Best to wear what the other students wear.

  6. did you say you have to learn everything about judo before you start learning judo?

is there some kind of entrance exam for the class

are you expecting to impress your teacher with your knowledge of the subject

as with many japanese martial arts (and most subjects in general) it would be better to apprach judo from the perspective of knowing nothing about it

if your mind is free from preconceptions (ie: thinking you know everything about it) it will be easier for you to learn what is being taught
