  1. In many parts of the book Kesey writes in what's called "stream of consciousness".  It is a form of narrative that offers a glimpse inside someone's mind, and often features what seem to be random thoughts or non sequiturs.  This is especially true of the scene in which Chief experiences shock treatment and there are over 2 pages of what seem to be random thoughts pouring out of his head.  These thoughts actually contain quite a lot of important symbolism.
