  1. I'm Leicester born and bred.

Leicester its self is alright but really it's a large town rather than a city.

Its very ethnically diverse with Leicester City having over 50% people of Asian origin.

It has fantastic Asian restaurants because of this.

I know DMU very well and in the past there has been problems with tensions between Muslim and Sikh. This has led to mass brawls and similar and a number of occasions of problems when the student union has its weekly Bangra night.

Last year things weren't so bad as far as I can tell.

I would avoid getting a room in any of the large students accomodation as to be frank these can be very noisy way into the early hours and again in the past there has been gangs of youths causing problems in them. There was a shooting in one about 18 months ago but to be fair the person doing the shooting didn't live there. He was obviously let in by someone though.

I don't know the Uni so well but its has a very good reputation and because of its much stricter entrance requirements it gets students who want to further their education rather than mess about for 2 years as often happens at DMU.

Their science dept is brilliant and DNA fingerprinting was developed there by Prof Jeffreys.

They have a lot of good sports teams if that's your thing as well.

Basically if you want to come to Leicester and you have the grades to go to the UNI rather than DMU go to the UNI.

    Its miles better.

  2. I went to Leicester Uni and it was a great place to study. I still live in Leicester (have lived there for the last 13 years). DMU is a good university too. Leicester is especially good for English, Medicine and Law - but is generally a really good Uni. The Students Union is pretty good too.

Are you planning on going into halls, or finding independent accommodation? If the former, the halls are in Oadby which is the posh part of the city, but are 2 and a half miles from the city centre.

They offer reasonable accommodation. Don't go to Beaumont Hall though, unless you want to spend your first year with toffs from public schools.

If you are looking for private accommodation - you will end up in a dump for £40/50 a week somewhere in Highfields (Leicester Uni) or Narborough Rd (DMU), or in a soulless cubicle in Filbert St accommodation in the student village. (I would recommend the former, but don't trust your landlord - they will rip you off and pocket your "deposit"). Of course, these are in fairly dodgy parts of the city - having lived in Highfields myself for the last thirteen years, I have only been mugged once and robbed twice, so by the law of averages you should be OK over three years at Uni!

Don't know that much about DMU - someone else may be able to give you a more accurate picture of that university.

Leicester also has the finest selection of curry houses anywhere in the east midlands and is a thriving multicultural city.

Can't believe the person who recommended Loughborough - it is quite a right wing city and it is really boring. Good university for sports though.

  3. leicester is good - de monfort is a bit pants

the city itself is not great - however, nottingham and loughborough are wonderful (well, loughborough town isn't - but the campus is)
