  1. Linux is an operating system. And it does everything! Not only that, it does it faster, better and more securely than any other kernel/os.

It never crashes, never needs to be defragmented, it's free, and the software for it is free.

    It's incredible

  2. First off, the best way to see what Linux is, would be to get a "Live CD".  This is a CD that allows you to boot into a linux system and actually play around.  It CAN install Linux to your hard drive if you want it to (You have to click the INSTALL icon) but it also allows you to browse the web, open files etc. without making any changes to your computer.  (Those changes and any "saved" files or options are lost as soon as you reboot your computer when running the Live CDs"

I'd suggest downloading ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com or KUbuntu from http://kubuntu.com  (The main difference between Kubuntu and Ubuntu is that desktop manager... Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop, and Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop.  KDE is more "integrated" than Gnome, but uses a little more memory.)

Linux is an operating system, just like Windows is an operating system, or Mac OSX is an operating system.  It is what controls your computer, displays stuff, runs the programs etc.  Although Linux can run a *few* windows programs using WINE, most windows programs that you may have on your system right now will NOT work.  There are LOTS of options for programs that do the same stuff as what you expect in windows, (Open Office.org in place of Microsoft Office, Totem Move player (Gnome) or Kaffeine (KDE) in place of Microsoft Media Player are just a couple of examples.  Firefox runs under linux just like it does in windows, Internet Explorer from windows will NOT run.

Most program in Ubuntu/Kubuntu will be instaleld using the "Package Manager"  under the "start" button you will see an add/remove programs.  If you open it, you will see a list of thousands of programs that you can click on to install.  Your linux system will automatically go out to the internet, download, and install any program that you select from that list.

Keep in mind that a "Live CD" like Ubuntu or Kubuntu will run a lot slower when it's running from the CD than if you actually choose to install it on your hard drive.

If you like what you see, you can click the Install icon on the desktop and it will see your existing windows installation.  During installation it will offer to automatically "resize" your windows partition, install Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) on the free space and will install a "Boot Manager" called GRUB (GRand Unified Boot loader) that will allow you to select booting into your old windows, or into Linux whenever you start up your computer.

If you don't have anything you want to keep in windows, and want to get rid of it completely, you can also choose to use the entire hard drive to install Linux to, in which case it will completely reformat your hard drive and wipe out your windows installation, along with any data you have there (Pictures, songs, email etc. etc.)

  3. Linux is Lucy's little brother. He just sits and sucks his thumb while holding his blanket.

  4. Linux is an operating system just like Windows is an operationg system.
