  1. as much as i hate to disagre with the esteemed contributor from newmarket.

Lucerne chaff is indeed the chopped up(chaff) version of lucerne hay and used as a bulk additive to stop horses bolting the food.

However, oatenchaff is made from the straw of the oat and nothing to do with grass, oat is a cereal ,again used to bulk the ration. Both fairly useless as a feed these days as the modern cube does it all for you.i had a chaff cutter working in my yard for years but it was time consuming and heavy work, the staff were very happy the day it was sold.

  2. Basically Lucerne and Oaten are specific types of grass that are grown to make hay and chaff.

Lucerne (also known as Alfalfa) is high in essential amino acids and calcium, but contains little phosphorus - so, if fed, you will need to balance the calcium/phosphorus ratio.

Talk to your feed supplier and see what they recommend you can use as an alternatie.
