Mutton is meat from an adult sheep.  It's generally considered fatty and fairly low quality; in other words, something poor people would eat.  Numerous traditional dishes, such as the famous 'shepherd's pie,' were originally designed to make mutton more palatable.  Mutton is still a common food in rural areas of the British isles and Ireland, eastern Europe, and the Middle East.  It was never popular in the US and almost none is sold here.
