What is New York like?

I am in high school right now. I don't know what I want to do when I grow up yet. My parents want me to go to a local college. After college, I may find a place to live. I am living in Northern CA. For the future I want to live in a nice city that has all four seasons because we don't have that in CA. If I stay in CA, I might move to LA. If out of CA, I don't know where to go. I like New York. What jobs are there and how is it? How are the houses and what is it like? What cities or states are also good?

  1. Can't you settle on a nice magic eight ball?

  2. Just to correct Thomas (above), Brooklyn is not like a small city! It is like a VERY LARGE city! If Brooklyn was a city outside NYC, it would be the 4th largest city in the U.S.

But Thomas is correct, there is much more to NYC than just Manhattan. Most of the living spaces in Manhattan are apartments, but there are far more single family or two family houses in the other 4 boroughs. That being said, I really doubt you'll be able to afford a house for a really long time! I live in a house, but I couldn't afford to buy it till I was in my 40s. And even then, it was only because I did well in the real estate market when I sold my co-op apartment.

Since you'll just be starting out, you'll most likely be living in an apartment, and proabably not alone. You'll probably need a roommate or two or even three to afford the rent here - even if you live in one of the outer boroughs. I moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn when I was in my early 20s because the rents were cheaper, and even then, Iived with 4 or 5 other people, just to make the rent! (We lived in pretty big apartments, but still, you've gotta like living with other people to do that!)

As for the rest of it, NYC is just wonderful! It's the best City in the Country! It has more diversity of people and places than anywhere else in America, it has more cultural activiities, and you can get around without a car! It's a great place to be a young person, if you can manage to afford it!

  3. wait wait wait!! how do you know you like new york if you dont know what its like!!???

anyway its awesome. lets leave it to that. but keep ur la vibe on the west coast. we dont do the hollywood thing

  4. new york city has 5 boros, it is not just manhattan. queens has a very diverse population, brooklyn is like a small city, staten island is its own world and the bronx well its the bronx.it is very expensive to live here, i live about 60 miles out of queens, but i have lived in nyc(queens) most of my life. the job outlook depends on what you want to do. from private to cival service to owning your own. rents run the gamut from low to obscene as well as house prices.i am a city worker with a hourly wage of 27.00 hr and its tough, but if i were looking i would look to the mid west, to the south west(its the fastest growing area) ex arizona, kansa, arkansas ect

  5. My friend, New York City is a fast pace city and one of the most expensive cities, as well. My advice, come and visit the city before considering settling here.

    Good luck

  6. New York is the greatest place you will ever go to in your entire life. Forget what anyone says about other cities in the world, there is only one NY and no other city can even compare! There is something for EVERYONE in the city and it's just an awesome place. I may be biased being from here and absolutely in love with my city but really its great. You will be so happy if you decide to live in NY. As far as jobs go, get a degree and your set...that's all you need to know!
