What is Over the Air television? ?

My TV has a setting that I can change, allowing me to select AIR, CATV1, or CATV2. What is Over the Air television? That is what AIR means, right?

  2. Yes "AIR" means "over the air television". It may be called "Antenna" or "Ant" on other  TV's. Sometimes it is abbreviated "OTA".

    If you set your TV to "AIR" it assumes you have attached a TV antenna to the the TV's antenna input.

    Before cable & satellite TV  were created, OTA was the only way to receive TV programing. Anymore, perhaps 20% of US households still use the free OTA programing.  

  3. It's traditional TV that you recieve with an antenna.  It's been around for about 70 years or so.
