Its a piping layout which is more complicated as stated in above answer.

Based on that and looking to the practical suitability isometric piping drawing can be prepared which is very easy to read and making BOM.

It is a drawing showing the layout of piping, typically in a plan view.  So, if you were designing a house, you would have bathrooms and kitchens with plumbing fixtures.  You might not actually detail how the plumbing was going to be installed because you don't know where the supply line will be initially, etc.  However, you would surely layout the waste piping if it were to be under a concrete slab for example.

The larger and more complex a design, the more detailed the piping layout will be.  On a ship you might typically only layout a plan view that would indicate where the pipe was to be run because there is lots of room.  On a submarine, you would have to lay the same thing out in full 3 dimensions in order to see if it would really fit in the space because the space is so limited.  In fact, on something like the space shuttle, I can assure you that they've not only laid everything out in detail on paper, they've actually build a model to scale to insure that everything fits.

So, how detailed is decided by how important it is and by how critical space is.
