  1. and just to add a bit to Eliza's answer, Prince Phillip's true surname would be Battenburg, but again it was changed (to Mountbatten) to make it sound a bit more British

hey, just imagine if Prince William had the surname Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Battenburg

  3. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. When Her Majesty signs papers, documents and so on, she writes 'Elizabeth R'. The R standing for 'regina', Latin for Queen.

Her real lastname would be Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, but that was changed in 1917 to "The House of Windsor" by her grandfather, George V.

When she married Philip, she, of course, did not take his surname because...well that would defeat the purpose! The House of Windsor would no longer really be on the throne. But in honour of their father, the Duke, the children of the Queen and Duke use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.

Mountbatten also is not Philip's true lastname, his true family house is 'Battenberg', which was translated to the English format by the Prince of Battenberg. When Prince Philip took British citizenship he adopted this English version because his mother was a Battenberg, or perhaps because that was his uncle's name and he wished to honour him.

    Cheers!

however the Royal Families true surname is "Saxe-Coburg-Gotha" but during the outbreak of the First world war, to Make the Royal family seem less German, they changed their name to something more British, which was Windsor
