That's a surprisingly good question.  Most people think the current royal family are English, they are actually German!!!  Don't always assume because you are a monarch in England that they are English!!  Elizabeth I was though, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

The other posters are correct to call her "English" but in reality, what is English? After the Norman conquest, one could call the royals French, but in actuality, the Normans were from Scandinavian stock.

Queen Elizabeth's ancestry was Anglo Saxon, Norman French, and Welsh. As Queen of England, however, she was the embodiment of the State, so in effect, she was the epitome of "Englishness." On that note, she was also"Irish" and "French."

Queen Elizabeth I is English like both of her parents, King Henry 8th and Anne Boleyn. She does have some french ancestry from her paternal grandmother Elizabeth of York, of whom she was named after. Queen Elizabeth's paternal great grandfather was Edward IV of York, who was born in Rouen, France (the second son of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York (who had a strong genealogical claim to the throne of England).

Queen Elizabeth I was not only Queen of England but also  Ireland and France (in name only). This also could suggest that her nationality is also Irish and French.
