What is Queens, NY like?

I am going there ofr college and would like to know what it is like. I am from Southern CA so let me know what I can expect as far as differences and what there is to do for students.

Holy s.hit you're from so cal?  I moved here from so cal 3 years ago for college in the bronx.  you're in for a culture shock.  Main difference?  Weather weather weather.  be in for a gruesome winter my friend.  Been to queens a few times and hated it--prefer bronx much more.  just don't take it personally when guys are ***** to you 24/7, it's just a way of life here (assuming you're a guy--if you're a girl be sure to get hit on by italians 24/7 once you say "i'm from cali").

Queens consists largely of middle-class, residential neighborhoods.  There are some very wealthy neighborhoods as well, and also some very poor ones.

Not sure where you're going for college, but St. John's is the biggest one in Queens as far as getting students from other parts of the country.  The area around the campus is residential, quite safe.  It is also VERY convenient to mass transit (not sure why one poster says it isn't).  The Q46 bus has multiple stops there, taking you right to the E and F trains into Manhattan.  The Q30 and Q31 buses also stop there, and they take you to the E/J/Z subways and the Long Island Rail Road.  These all take you into Manhattan.

Other colleges in Queens are also very convenient to mass transit.  So, you'll have easy access to ALL parts of the city, as well as to the whole region (convenience to the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Rail Road, NJ Transit, Amtrak, Greyhound, and so forth).

As for the college experience, campuses are typically fairly small, so getting across campus isn't a terribly long distance.  In that way, colleges in NYC are generally different from other places.  There's simply do room for a campus to sprawl out.

Before long, I think you'll find that going to college in NYC is really one unique kind of experience, and a fun one.  That's why I didn't even think of going away to school.  Well after graduation, I have no regrets, whatsoever.

The biggest difference is the whether.  Also, public transportation in Queens is much better than in ca, except for around St. Johns.  As for difference in student life, you do not have college neighborhoods in queens like you do in so cal.

It's a nice place- but Culturally, it's a LOT Different than So. Cal.-so brace yourself !!! The GREAT thing about it is; you'll be really CLOSE to N.Y.C.. So whenever You get some time off, you can take the Bus into the "Big Apple", & check out the "sights". "Boredom" is going to be the LAST thing you'll have to worry about, -believe me!  :)
