  1. Romanticism as a philosophy and the romantic period was and still is very difficult to define. It ranged from the 18th century to the 19th century and was heavily influenced by the Enlightenment the period that went immediately before it.

The French philosopher, Rousseau defined romanticism as a return to nature. http://dlibrary.acu.edu.au/research/lit/... This is too simplistic.

Shelley, Keats and Byron were three poets of the English speaking romantic era.

I hope that this helps clear the air in relation to the Romantic period. It is rich in artistic and intellectual growth. It was one of the fastest periods of economic growth in the history of mankind prior to the 20th century. Hence the wealthy were able to afford to support or be patrons of the arts, learning and invention. In this way the arts prospered.

Also learning and universities started to become available to the children of the newly monied middle and merchant classes.  These people entered the professions. A new middle/professional class arose that was neither of the old medieval peasant class or of the aristocracy. It was basically from this educated middle class that our present - day democratic system has sprung.

You have hours of reading ahead of you if you are to unravel all of the above. It covers the lead up to the 20th and 21st centuries. It is a truely interesting period to study I wish you well in finding out as much as you can about it. Also try your local library for more information.

    Good Luck!!!

  2. "Romanticism is a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in the second half of the 18th century in Western Europe, and gained strength during the Industrial Revolution.  It was partly a revolt against aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment and a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature, and was embodied most strongly in the visual arts, music, and literature."   Check out the Romanticism era of art.. you can actually see it in the art, lots of frills, soft paint.... it's pretty cool once you see how it relates to it's name.  Check out Wikipedia
