The above answers are right on.  Ronald McDonald House Charities provide housing for families when their children are very ill and hospitalized.  They charge on a sliding scale and are usually very close to the hospital so the family can be close to the child.  In addition they support other children related and medical research work.  They do a fabulous job, are nonprofit, and staffed largely by volunteers.

They provide families with a place to stay who have sick children in hospitals who cannot afford a motel/hotel ro cannot stay in the hospital. I stayed in one in Tucson, AZ 7 yrs ago when my son was born because he was extra large and was having breathing problems and had to be air lifted from NM to AZ. It was a scary frightning experience, but the Ronald McDonald staff was very warm and inviting. It only cost $10 a night too..
