SAP is Systems, Applications & Products. it is an Enterprise system used in med and large size corporations, SAP was originated in Germany but is used world wide. It combines entities like HR, Finance, logistics, medical into a single platform.

An ERP system is a business support system that maintains in a single database the data needed for a variety of business functions such as Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management, Financials, Projects, Human Resources and Customer Relationship Management.

The SAP ERP application is an integrated enterprise resource planning (ERP) software manufactured by SAP AG that targets business software requirements of midsize and large organizations in all industries and sectors. It is the successor product to SAP R/3.

SAP is a very popular business management software, or an ERP (an enterprise resource planning) software.  It's a database system that keeps track of all debits and credits in a business, but goes way beyond that.  It also keeps track of inventories and figures out how much of what will be needed by when, sends lists of items to purchase to Procurement, keeps track of all kinds of data for managing a business.  It's usually most cost effective for a large, multi-plant corporation.  I don't know how popular it is in Oz, but it's pretty common here in the States for very large corporations.  There are other competitive products, such as One World.  It would be helpful to be familiar with at least one of these programs.  Good luck in Oz.  I spent a couple of weeks there on holiday back in March.  Beautiful country.
