  1. For lots of details of the scientific process involved, look up "Atomic absorption spectrometry."

    Good luck!

  2. That's right. We would take them on DC-10 every 150 engine hours.  You have a little box with a kit and paperwork. You take the samples, fill out the paperwork and box it up again and off to the lab. After they test the sample, they can determine if you have any internal engine malfunctions, such as wearing down of components. If they find metal deposits in your oil, then get out your wallet and get ready for an engine overhaul.

  3. Spectrographic Oil Analysis Program.  They burn oil samples taken from engines to determine if any metal is present, as in bearing starting to go, etc.

In the F-16 the samples were taken every two sorties.

  4. In modern aircrafts wherein engines have a magnetic chip detector, SOAP is seldom sample. All you have to do is check the chip detector and see if there are metal chips, whiskers or even carbon soot, these things found on the magnetic chips are send out if the findings is heavy metal chips  wherein an engine boroscope is done to see the engine core turbine blades or if suspected bearing failure.

  5. Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program
