  2. Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database system with assorted applications. The current version is SQL 2005, though SQL 2008 ("Katmai") is about to go in wide release.

    There is a free Express version that you can download and use for practice. Or you can buy an Enterprise version for multi-CPU multi-core servers, which will cost more.

    Before Microsoft's SQL Server product (6.5 was the first version), Sybase used the SQL Server name. Sybase is still around. It has named its SQL Server Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE).

    For questions like "what is a database" you are better off using an online encyclopedia.
