Go and find your local sailing clubs and volunteer to go out as crew.

As a crew member all you need is the cloths on your back, some soft soled shoes like seekers, and your sandwiches in a zip lock bag.

Be a crew first, you will learn a lot. Then take sailing lessons in small sailing dingy. Learning in a small boat is both cheaper and faster than learning in a big boat.  

Best option is not an expensive sailing school, but classes put on by volenteers at your local sailing club.

You may also want to see if a community collage near you has a sailing program.  They can be very low cost.
