  1. Type in "Savant Syndrome wiki" into google,It's all their.

    Something to do with Autism.

  2. wikipedia. search savant syndrome. not that hard.

  3. Savant Syndrome usually manifests in someone with a developmental disability but it's not a requirement. Savant is an unusual ability, usually something off the charts, that the person has without any schooling or training. Like playing an instrument like a master the first time they pick it up at age 3. That type of thing. Only there are abilities we often do not know about yet. Math is another area one can be savant in. You can have it with any person of any kind of abilities or dis-abilities. Someone with autism who can barely even stand to be in a room with another human might paint or draw phenomenally. With no schooling at all. And a few do make extraordinary livings that way. The non-disabled often do not need someone to manage their lives so it's actually not so recognized in the able bodied. The contrasts are not so pronounced. The more disabled a person is the more striking the giftedness shows up. And for some reason there is an unsually high percentage of Savants in the Autism and like related disorders.

  4. Savant Syndrome is basically a person who has developmental disorders (e.g. people who have autism) and have some sort of expertise and shows exceptionality in one area.

For example, an autistic person has incredible memory, but it is very narrow.

  5. A person with Savant Syndrome will have exceptional splinter skills.

  6. An 'idiot savant' can (does) have remarkable specific abilities (such as mental arithmetic) but otherwise is classified as 'idiot' in the literal sense that he/she represents the lowest grade of feeble mindedness (an IQ not above 25).  Some of your other respondents are totally wrong to think that autism is somehow connected to an 'idiot savant'.  It isn't.

PS:  Interesting that in French 'un chien savant' is 'a performing dog'.  Perhaps 'un idiot savant' is sometimes used in the same way?  We get them to perform.

  7. There is a clear connection between savant syndrome and autism.  Read the research please.

  8. Savant syndrome is a rare condition to be found in a small number of people who have significant intellectual disability.

It presents as an island of exceptional ability in an otherwise disabled and dependent individual.

The area of ability may be calendar calculating, a unique, mathematical skill, eidetic memory etcetera.

It is not specifically related to autism, it can occur in conjunction with any severe intellectual disability.
