What is Sensory and Intellectual Development, and what are the best ways to promote it with young children? - I've looked, but cannot really find any detail of what exactly it is, and would appreciate some help to understand fully?

  1. Sensory intellectul development is helping children to learn using their senses. Young children are sensory learners, for example even a tiny baby will turn its head in response to a sound or a smell. Small children also learn by exploring and first hand experience. So, one of the best ways to teach children through their senses is to give them experiences using as many senses as possible. In my preschool we teach letters using, for example, listening to the sound, making the letter shape in the air and using letters cut out of sand paper, which they can trace with their fingers, or do a rubbing through paper. This gives an all round sensory experience, so that instead of seeing a letter on a page and someone saying "this says sss", they see it in lots of different ways. It makes learning more interesting and fun and allows children to find their own learning style. Hope this helps.

  2. Hiya, look up words such as cognitive behaviour, cognitive learning etc...thats the term often used for intellectual development.

Sensory simply means senses (sight, sound, taste etc) and intellect refers to things such as memory, understanding, problem solving etc.

It all depends on the age/stage of the child so its worth looking up child development to look at the stages as you can then decide wich is the best way to promote it.

Unders 3s will be on Birth To Three and so its more about extending THEIR choice of play than planning whats "best for them" I feel for under 3 play such as water, pop up toys, boxes/tubs of various sizes with buttons, pine cones etc is a good intellectual and sensory activity-they explore transporting, textures, big and little, problem solving.

For 3-5's they wll be on Foundation Stage (im mostly refering to england btw), where it shows us critera the child should be working towards. Things such as "thinking", "explaining","exploring" are used. So its giving chidlren chance to do things on their own. Activities such as jigsaws, shape sorters, "kims games", "sound lotto", as well as extend water play (full/empty), sand (sieves, sand wheels etc), sensory play such as jelly, spagetti etc to explore textures.

Best way to promote is to "learn through play" letting the children explore freely without feelings pressured to learn and achieve. Look up Piaget, Vkgotsky and Mary Sheridan (Sheridan is more about development stages).

  3. Sensory development means relating to the senses.

Intellectual development means related to intellect.

A child develops an awareness and understanding of their environment by using their senses.

Theorist Jean Piaget identified stages of sensory & intellectual development which relate to concepts, reasoning, problem solving, imagination, creativity, concentration and memory.

Play is very important to a child and is how he/she learns and develops in many different areas. Play especially promotes cognitive development & through play children develop an understanding of difficult concepts, e.g. wet and dry sand.

Intellectual development is more linked to mathematical concepts to solve problems, e.g. sinking and floating.

Look up these theorists: Piaget, Freud, Bruner & Vygotsky, as these all developed theories of how children learn.

Through sensory play, children respond to what they see, smell, hear, touch and feel & they respond with excitement, shock, happiness, etc. These responses can be verbal and non-verbal.

It is important to provide a setting/environment/room/area where children can express themselves freely, as this encourages their sensory development.

Unexpected incidents (unplanned) can aslo greatly influence a childs sensory and intellectual development, exampls include: snow, thunder & lightening, grass being cut, an emergency such as an evacuation practice.

Many factors will influence a childs sensory development including: firm attachment to parent/primary carer, playing with others & a positive socio-economic background.

Some specific conditions may affect a child however, a child with cerebral palsy (lack of control of muscles & movement) may find that his/her sense of touch is affected and children with Downs syndrome are prone to hearing losses.

Hope all this information helps, a basis to get you started anyway!

  4. Sensory Intellectual Development for teaching young children is learning through ntheir senses: hearing, touching, tasting, seeing and smelling.   Most sensory development is through hands-on activities that you and your baby does at home but you are just not familiar or not aware of. Talking to your baby is hearing sensory you can develop it by elaborating in the simplest form. For example telephone ringing, tell your baby the phone is ringing, "lets go  see who it, ok?  Touching sensory is when you can engage your child in many activities for example  while eating, bathing, eating, tell your baby for example, teddy bear is soo soft, water is cold, etc and and so one.

My grandmother is 10 months, I sent her Baby Einstein DVDs which she loves as it develops her hearing, seeing, sensory as well as it teaches my son and grand daughter how simple things can actually trigger the interest of my grand daughter. It will be a good idea to invest on one of those to begin with. You can find used ones on Ebay for very little price. But first go to babyeinstein.com and see their products and dvd so you can decide which one is best for you and your baby.  I bought Baby Bethoven, Mozart, Newton, Monet, and language nursery. I hope this will help you.

In whatever you do, enjoy your baby or child as you explore new ways of teaching her/him.
