  1. its a white substance called lard and other stuff but it does its duty when baking i would go with a can of crisco its a blue can or another cheaper product. butter is good for cooking too but not what youwant to bake

  2. Fat ie:- lard, margerine or butter depending on what your making

  3. Lard.

    (Crisco in the can)

  4. crisco..in the baking section..in a can

  5. Technically, all fats are "shortenings," but the recipe is probably referring to CRISCO (or the storebrand).  You can use lard too, but I've never used it.  If you don't have that, then vegetable oil or unsalted, softened butter would probably work

  6. Lard is correct it's brand name is crisco it's very unhealthy though

  7. Shortening is a type of cooking fat, that you buy in a tub. It's got a consistency like cold cream, and it makes your baked goods taste good, and be buttery and flaky, if it's supposed to be. =)

You can buy it in the aisle with the corn oil and crisco and stuff.

  8. lmfao i thought it was like buttery

    But its lard

  9. Crisco is the name of the shortening

  10. Shortening is hydrogenated vegetable oil, usually containing some level of trans-fat.  It is solid and shelf stable at room temperature.

In the US, Crisco is the most popular brand of shortening.

  11. Shortening is Crisco, which is a name brand, so the recipe says shortening. Often you can substitute butter and sometimes, you can substitute oil.

  12. Products like Crisco, it's vegetable shortening.

  13. Shortening is a solid white fat bought in a can at the store.  You can substitute butter for shortening.

  14. It's that white greasy stuff found in a tin can in the baking isle at the grocery store that says shortining.

  15. solid type  like crisco  in a can  bad for you but great for all my southern recipes i love

  16. crisco-lard

  17. Crisco

  18. It's solidified oils. Usually from vegetables or meat fats depending on which kind you choose. If that grosses you out then you should be able to use butter instead.

  19. Lard -

Crisco shortening  in the oil isle...they have butter flaver too you can buy cans or sticks of this , dont gross out but a lot of recipes need this to be complete ( butter or margerine will not work  as well or ruin the recipe)

  20. Shortening is any sort of fat.

Crisco (vegetable shortening) is the usual kind. Look for it on the baking aisle of your market.

But lard (animal fat) is another. It is usually found in the meat case, since it's made from animal fat.

So is butter and margarine. Real unsalted butter and stick margarine (not whipped butter or margarine) can be used interchangeably in recipes calling for shortening.

You cannot substitute liquid OILS of any kind for shortening.

  21. Shortening, in its most generic meaning, is any fat or oil that is used to make a short crust or dough (one that has a high ratio of fat to flour, and turns out tender, crumbly, and rich).

In general usage, when you see the word shortening as an ingredient in a recipe in this country, the author is referring to solid vegetable shortening, of which Crisco is the leading brand.

  22. it is pretty much like lard if you do not have or like it you can substitute it with butter it works the same i bought some crisco brand and i found that lard was hard to scoop and measure it is in the oil section of the supermarket

  23. Shortening is straight fat or lard.  Crisco is the only company I know that sells it everywhere.
