It's a telephone service run from your pc. You have skype in and skype out. You can call skype to skype for free. You can call all around the world to landlines or mobiles for a low rate by creditting your account.

Also, if you want to be contacted by mobile or landline, you can obtain a skype in number. You can also use skype on your mobile phone , forget how it works now but it's all on their webiste .

As well as talk PC -PC you can make phone calls to different or local calls a lot cheaper than most of the regular landlines providers , I myself have also purchased what is called a skype phone which is a dual phone it has a landlines and a skype phone combined , but I also use it to phone friends on their landlines by buying credits.its a free download and if you dont buy credits you can use it PC-PC free

Skype is a free program that uses VoIP (Voice over the internet protocall) to communicate over the internet. If you have skype on your computer and your friends have it, you can talk to them over the internet for free. You can even get a webcam and see each other. I used it when my boyfriend was is America (I'm in South Africa). It really works!

Skype is a telephone system whereby you talk through your computer completely free of charge if both you and the person you are speaking to has Skype set up. Obviously if you have webcams then you can see each other as you talk. It is best to have earplugs and a microphone but if you are the only one in the room, it is possible to use skype using built in microphone and speakers. I speak regularly with friends in France and Russsia this way and can talk at any time of day whereas with my BT phone, I only get free calls at weekends or in evenings. Also, unlike email where you have to know the email addresses of your contacts, here just key in the name of people and if they are registered with Skype, their number or sign in/user name comes up. BT also have their own version, Softphone.
