I am taking part in a summer intnernship in the city for 4 months only. I am female, butnot stupid (i.e. walking around late at night alone!) I have heard some bad things about the area and just wanted some reassurance about what the place is like?

Thank you

  1. It's fine. There is an infamous gang called the Stockwell Soldiers. Maybe that's where part of the rep came from, but they're just kids.

It's no worse than anywhere else in terms of danger, and it's relatively central with good transport links.

Stockwell is very close to Clapham and Balham which are lovely. You'll have Clapham Common right nearby too, which is a big park. Come to think of it, Stockwell is a great location.

Every place has some people who slag it off. I bet some even have bad things to say about Kensington!

  2. The stockwell soldiers may only be " kids"  but i haven't seen to many adults mentioned in the last 5 stabbings in south london, i think the last offender was 12.

Keep well clear, it's the pits.

  3. Certain parts of Stockwell can feel a bit dicey, particularly at night - but what area doesn't have parts like that? There's quite a lot of social housing, which is visually unappealing and that's largely where the bad reputation comes from.

I know a couple of people who live in Stockwell who really like it. I've visited them a few times, including times when I've had to walk to the tube station after dark and never found the experience bothersome.
