Taipei, Taiwan is a great city and easy to go on foot from attraction to attraction. Their Skytrain is also very easy to use.

The youth hostel I stayed in did not honour the reservation I had made . I had ordered a double room, but when I arrived, they put me in a dorm instead. It was also very old and dirty.

The Sheraton hotel, just across the street from the hostel was modern and clean. The Backpackers hotel in a different district also looked very modern and clean.

There are English signs everywhere, and even at McDonalds the overhead menu board is in English.

The outdoors hotbath had dirty, smelly water, but the mountain area northeast of Taipei was a good experience.

The city tours sold at a booth in the Sheraton Hotel are a rip-off,

They claim that pick-up time is not included in the length of a tour, but in fact, these tours are all reduced by at least half an hour, and wind up at the same giftshop.

It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter but no snow unles you go up high in the mountains.

Taiwan is heavily populated and industrialized on the western plains.  The east coast is sparsely populated and very beautiful.  Air pollution is an issue in the three big cities of Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung.

There are towering mountains and pristine forests in Taiwan as well.

Taiwan gets typhoons and earthquakes.  It is subtropical in the north and tropical in the south.

Politically and economically, Taiwan is a modern, prosperous democracy.

Malaysia is tropical.  It is hot and humid there all year.  The cities are beautiful, as are the beaches and tourists area.

The people were friendly and kind to us in both places.
