Jeremy is completely right. L'Avenue Montaigne is upscale, classy, and contains many high-end luxury stores such as Chanel, Gucci, Armani, Dior, Prada, and Nina Ricci.

L'Avenue des Champs-Elysees is mostly 'pour les touristes !!'

i dont agree with jeremie.

idont know NYC, but i had a look in wikipedia that said that 5th avenue is well-known for :

- great shops

- museums and theatres

- parade

- gardens (central park)

- a long way

so... avenue Montaigne is OK with the shops : this is the place where are the most expensive shops. but there isnt anything else and it's a short street.

on the contrary, in the avenue des Champs-Elysées, you have:

- great shops (Lacoste, Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Nike, Peugeot, Renault) and great restaurants (Fouquet's, etc)

- museums (Galeries du Grand Palais and Petit Palais), cinemas (3 cinemas) and theatres (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées)

- parades (Défilé du 14-Juillet for the national day in france, finish of the Tour de France every year)

- gardens (Jardins des Champs-Elysées, des Tuileries, du Grand Palais...)

- it'sa very long street, cause it's part of the "Perspective royale" from the Louvre Castle - jardin des Tuileries - place de la Concorde - avenue des Champs-Elysées - place de l'Etoile - avenue de la Grande Armée to la Défense.

so, i think the parisan 5th-Ave is the Avenue des Champs-Elysées.

It's definitely  Avenue Montaigne, 8th arrondissement.
