The Aboriginal Intervention Policy started last year under Prime Minister John Howard and Aboriginal Affairs minister Mal Brough. The policy allowed government representatives and medical teams to assess the situation for Aboriginal Australians (particularly children in remote communities) for housing, medical needs, education, alcohol abuse and child abuse. It basically gives the government the legal authority to enter and remain in aboriginal communities until every child is assessed, and removed from home or restrictions placed on parents who are considered abusive or not allowing their children to attend school everyday.

There has been some support and some negative feedback from these Aboriginal communities since the policy was introduced. But the idea is to help those who are unable to help themselves, stopping the abuse cycle - where child sexual assault often happens every single day. There are remote areas here in NSW where Aboriginal parents will "sell" their 10 year old children for s*x to passing truck drivers - just to make money to spend on alcohol!

I understand that the current Rudd Labor Government is still comitted to continuing this policy (perhaps with some changes).
