Yes, six weeks is a very good age.

You can get cats at any age - but don't take them from their mothers any younger than six weeks unless she abandoned them or can't care for them. I adopted a four-hour old kitten when it's mother was killed - it's TOUGH work but he turned out healthy and normal.

I actually got mine at six weeks from the humane society. I also got my dog at six weeks from the same place.

Yes, irresponsible people sell them that young. 5 to 6 weeks is when they start weaning off the milk from their mother. However, at that age they don't have any "social training" from being around other cats and people. They don't know how use the litter box (mom trains them), they don't know how to hunt or play properly (they learn from their mom and litter mates) and they may be skittish or overly aggressive because they never learned good manners. They will also be to young to have had any of their booster shots, so you will have to pay for them all.

It's best to look for people selling kittens that are at least 12 weeks old.

That's when I got mine! Sooo adorable! If they get abandoned to the shelter and they are up for adoption, why not? It may not be the best for them to be taken from mommy that young, but better at your home than in a cage at the shelter.
