It is an open source Linux based Operating System for free.

I've started using Ubuntu as my secondary OS with Windows XP as my primary and I have grown to really like it better than Windows. I was searching for another OS because my computer isn't 100% compatible with Windows Vista, plus I can't see an OS taking 2GB's of RAM to run good. While I do like Windows XP, Ubuntu is so much more reliable and faster to work with. It does have a steep learning curve but don't let that deter you from trying it because there is a lot of help on the internet if you have a problem. You can run a lot of Windows applications on Ubuntu using the WINE emulator even though you may need to configure WINE, but you can't argue with free. I find Ubuntu way better to use than Windows for internet and applications while Windows is good for games and encoding.
