Thanks in advance.

  1. This info is relevant for the UK, I am not sure about the US.>>

The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is usually found somewhere on the body of a vehicle, such as just inside the bonnet. It can also be found on the windows or on the dashboard(usually on more modern vehicles).

It is also known as the chassis number. No two numbers are the same in the world. Their purpose is kind of the same as that of a Vehicle license plate, however, unlike number plates, it is much harder to change (one reason not to steal a car and just change the plates).

When MOT testing, the VIN number is required along with the number plate registration. The DVLA has a database that will match the VIN and Reg. plates to the type of car you have (to save inputting all of the information to do with the car).

So, basically, it is just a way of identifying cars. If you were to buy a car, you could go to a garage or dealer and check that the VIN and Reg. Number match up, thus almost guarantying that the vehicle is not stolen (if it is 2nd hand).

  2. Vehicle Identification Number basically like ur social security number if you run a carfax or soemthing of the sort it will tell you the year model the trim the color the accessories and anything that has been done and recorded with the vin its is unique to each car similar to a finger print just with numbers and letters

  3. A Vehicle Identification Number, commonly abbrevated to VIN or VIN number, is a unique serial number used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles. Prior to 1980, there was not an accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats.

Modern day VINs consist of 17 characters which do not include the letters I, O or Q.

For example, within 1G (assigned to General Motors in the United States), 1G1 represents Chevrolet passenger cars; 1G2, Pontiac passenger cars; and 1GC, Chevrolet trucks.

  4. The VIN # is usually on the lower part of the windsheild and on a sticker on the driver door jam.it is used to track a car, incase its stolen in an accident etc...

  5. Yeah...what that Italian guy said. =]
