  1. its actually a gorgeous place to visit.

  2. With the fall of Sàigòn to North Vietnamese forces on April 30, 1975, political authority within South Việtnam was nominally assumed by the North Vietnamese controlled Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam but in reality, political authority rested with the North Vietnamese Army. This government merged with North Việtnam on July 2, 1976, to form a single nation officially called the Socialist Republic of Việtnam

Upon taking control, the Vietnamese communists banned other political parties, arrested people believed to have collaborated with the U.S. and sent them to reeducation camps. The government also embarked on a mass campaign of collectivization of farms and factories. Reconstruction of the war-ravaged country was slow and serious humanitarian and economic problems confronted the communist regime. Millions of people fled the country in crudely-built boats, creating an international humanitarian crisis[1][2]. In 1978, the Vietnamese Army invaded Cambodia to remove the Khmer Rouge from power. This action worsened relations with China, which launched a brief incursion into northern Vietnam in 1979. This conflict caused Vietnam to rely even more heavily on Soviet economic and military aid.

It was presumed that if Vietnam became Communist, all the surrounding countries would follow, like dominoes. The dire predictions did not come to fruition. Since Thailand and other South East Asian nations did not fall to systematic Vietnamese aggression, the Domino Theory, so widely trumpeted, was said to have been an illusion. Others, however, argued that they did not fall to Communism, because the war bought time for their economic and political development. Vietnam, without the presence of the United States, showed itself to be of little economic or strategic value to anyone

In a historic shift in 1986, the Communist Party of Vietnam implemented free-market reforms known as Đổi Mới (Renovation). With the authority of the state remaining unchallenged, private ownership of farms and companies, deregulation and foreign investment were encouraged. The economy of Vietnam has achieved rapid growth in agricultural and industrial production, construction and housing, exports, and foreign investment. It is now one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

Some other consequences of the war in Vietnam include the persecution of Viet-American children, the offspring of American soldiers and Vietnamese women.

Also, there was a large influx of Vietnamese to the US in the 70's, as so-called "boat people" escaped Vietnam by boat, sailing to Thailand, then emigrating to the US. There is a very large concentration of Vietnamese in Orange County, CA.

  3. As modern as Paris or New York or Vienna. But lots of motorbikes - total bike population is 12 million. Population is 75 million. 70% below 35 years old. The war ended April 1975 - thats 32 years ago! Most Vietnamese don't know about the war. National growth 8-10% yearly. Thats far far better than the US. Vietnamese Girls are the prettiest in South East Asia.

  4. There are some photos of Vietnam. Vietnam is still developing and the life is still hard, but it's a peaceful place with smiles, ordinary and simply happiness.

  5. Everything is very cheap and the govt. is corrupt.  There are hundreds of clothing factories mass producing ripoff Columbia, Patagonia, Nike, etc. and selling them to eager tourists.  The drivers are crazy.  There are some very beautiful spots of Vietnam that are very cheap for purchase.  Basically, it hasn't fully recovered from the war.  You might want to research news stories coming out of Vietnam for a better look at modern Vietnamese life.

  6. After 40+ years you can't tell there was a war.  The people are great, the scenery is fantastic and the food unbelievable.

One of the best places in the world to take a holiday.  Cheers

  7. Lots of changes in Vietnam today, In foreigners's eyes  It is a beautiful country with lovely people,..Everywhere has different beauty..Despite the cacophony of hooting horns in the cities..

The traffic and driving was amazing. Sightseeing from Hanoi to Hochiminh city is very interesting
