  1. The architecture was developed and refined from the 1930 to 1947 period by John von Neumann and resulted in the first generation of modern computers in the early 1950s. There are four main components in the VNA, two of them are the memory management unit MMU and the arithmetic logic unit ALU. Data and numeric values are passed around the computer to different registers and units and the output is accessible by the operating system or a computer program written by a user. Machines similar to enumerators, difference analysers and sequential integrators do not have the VNA units and modified or reduced versions of languages have to be used with different compilers/interpreters and some reduced function. Application programs may be source code compatible but normally need a recompile when moving a program to a different model.
